PRE AND POST-TREATMENT ADVICE

Pre-Treatment Advice

  1. Avoiding Sun Exposure:
    • Advice: Refrain from sun exposure, tanning beds, and tanning creams for at least 4 weeks before treatment. Avoid these throughout the entire treatment course.
    • Reason: Sun exposure increases the risk of burns, hyperpigmentation, and adverse reactions during laser treatments, as the skin becomes more sensitive to heat.

  2. Medication Disclosure:
    • Advice: Inform our Laser Operator during your consultation or upon arrival if you are taking any medications listed in your Consultation Form.
    • Reason: Some medications, such as antibiotics, retinoids, or diuretics, can cause photosensitivity, making your skin more prone to burns or irritation during laser treatment.

  3. Health and Medication Updates:
    • Advice: Notify our Laser Operator immediately if your medical conditions change or if you start taking new medications during your treatment plan.
    • Reason: New health conditions or medications can impact the safety or effectiveness of laser treatments, requiring adjustments to your treatment plan.

  4. Shaving Before Treatment:
    • Advice: Shave the treatment area 2-3 days before your appointment. Avoid shaving on the day of treatment. Clippers are available at the clinic if needed.
    • Reason: Shaving reduces the risk of burns from surface hair. However, shaving on the treatment day can cause micro-cuts or skin irritation, increasing sensitivity during the procedure.

  5. Pain Tolerance and Energy Adjustment:
    • Advice: Inform your operator if you are particularly sensitive to heat or discomfort, and report any discomfort during the treatment so the energy levels can be adjusted.
    • Reason: Laser energy levels can be customized to your pain tolerance to ensure comfort. Over time, you may build tolerance to the procedure as your skin adapts to the treatment.

Post-Treatment Advice

  1. Expected Reactions:
    • Advice: Redness, sensitivity, swelling, bruising, or small blood blisters are normal post-treatment. Avoid touching the treated area except to cool it with an ice pack.
    • Reason: These are typical healing responses from laser treatment and usually subside within a few days. Touching the area unnecessarily may increase the risk of infection or irritation.

  2. Cooling the Area:
    • Advice: Apply ice packs within the first 2 hours to reduce discomfort and minimize the risk of blistering.
    • Reason: Cooling helps soothe the skin, reduce inflammation, and prevent blister formation.

  3. Keeping the Area Dry:
    • Advice: Keep the treated area dry for at least 24 hours. Avoid swimming for 3 days.
    • Reason: Water exposure, especially to chlorinated or saltwater, can irritate the skin and delay the healing process.

  4. Avoiding Exercise:
    • Advice: Refrain from strenuous physical activity for 24 hours post-treatment.
    • Reason: Exercise raises body temperature and increases sweating, which can irritate the treated area and increase the risk of infection.

  5. Blister Care:
    • Advice: Blisters may form but should be treated like sunburn blisters. Do not pick scabs or burst blisters.
    • Reason: Blisters are superficial and part of the healing process. Picking at them can lead to infections or permanent scarring.

  6. Moisturizing with Vitamin E Cream:
    • Advice: Apply Vitamin E cream to the treated area as often as possible.
    • Reason: Vitamin E promotes skin healing, reduces redness, and may prevent scarring. However, some individuals may find it irritating—switch to a bland moisturizer if necessary.

  7. Sun Protection:
    • Advice: Avoid sun exposure for at least 2 months post-treatment and cover the treated area completely. If exposure is unavoidable, use SPF 30+ sunscreen.
    • Reason: Sun exposure on treated skin increases the risk of hyperpigmentation, burns, or other adverse effects.

  8. Using Antiseptic Powder:
    • Advice: Consider using antiseptic powder to accelerate healing, especially if the skin is broken.
    • Reason: Antiseptic powder helps prevent infection in broken skin and promotes faster healing. It’s a handy product for your home first aid kit.

  9. Makeup Application:
    • Advice: If the skin is unbroken, makeup can be applied immediately after treatment. If the skin is broken, apply antiseptic powder first.
    • Reason: Unbroken skin can tolerate clean, non-comedogenic makeup. For broken skin, antiseptic powder reduces the risk of infection before makeup application.
